David Schulz' Journal (Insurance Salesman)

$14.50

David W. Schulz was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1864. His parents Frederick and Emily were from Prussia (Germany). The family owned a farm in Wausau, Wisconsin where David attended school with his 8 sisters and 2 brothers. By 1883 they had moved to St. Louis, Missouri. His dad died in 1895 and David is listed as head of household on the 1900 US Census. He was living with his mom and 4 siblings. His sisters worked as tailors sewing vests. His brother was a graniteware enameler.

David was an insurance broker with Lawton, Byrne and Bruner insurance agency. His office was located in the Pierce Building in downtown St. Louis. The company occupied rooms 706 to 712. It was designed by architect Frederick Bonsak and built in 1907. There is a lot of information about this fascinating, historic building – you can read more about it here… https://www.builtstlouis.net/opos/piercebuilding.html

By 1920 his mom had passed away. I found David living as a lodger on Henrietta Street in the 15th Ward. The 1930 US Census found him was living with his sister and brother-in-law. His occupation is listed as an attorney. The only lawerly information I found was his signature on several patent documents. He signed as a witness when the patents were applied for.

David never married and passed away in 1942 at 77 years old. His address was listed at 6742 Arsenal Street, St. Louis, Missouri.

I created this journal inspired by David’s original business ledger. I purchased it from a Missouri seller so ironically, the story of David’s life made a full circle back to Wisconsin. I have included the original ledger pages written by David.

Sheep’s Notes: Includes 30 pages; decorated with mainly vintage ephemera that one would expect to find in an insurance salesman’s ledger.

Price: $14.50
