Antique Newspaper Bundle (1835 to 1935)

$12.00

This batch of newspapers is a treasure- an amazing find that I still can’t believe I have here in front of me! Our little Shetland sheep Mimi has been reading them to me while I file ephemera for bundles. You can read more about her cute self here…

This bundle includes 1 folio from 8 different newspapers including:

1834 & 1835- The Edinburgh Journal. ‘Conducted’ (written/managed) by William and Robert Chambers. William authored The Book of Scotland. Robert authored Traditions of Edinburgh and Picture of Scotland. You can read more about the Chambers here… The newspapers are priceless to read. They are in fair to good condition which is amazing since they are almost 200 years old. The paper is strong and you can feel the type. It is scrumptious. There are no illustrations.

1885 & 1889- Der Bazar. A German fashion newspaper printed for ladies in America. There are absolutely stunning illustrations! The paper is in excellent condition. There are patterns for clothes, knitting, articles and more. I will be sure to include a folio with illustrations for you.

1886 to 1889- The Household, Devoted To The Interests Of The American Housewife. Published in Brattleboro, Vermont by Geo. E. Crowell. The ads in this paper are so much fun! There are some illustrations but the paper printed articles all about anything a lady would want to know. Recipes, crafting, etc etc.

1896 - The Youth’s Companion. News, songs, stories and more geared to children. Or for mom and dad to read to their children. There are ads and some illustrations. In excellent shape.

1899 & 1901- The Reedsburg (WI) Free Press. A local newspaper that covers all things of interest to Reedsburg city and surrounding townships. Gossip, stories, news, school reports, recipes and LOTS of ads. In ok shape, a little more fragile.

1899 & 1901- Pall Mall Gazette. Published in London. It is a parody newspaper, my thoughts are it is The Onion newspaper of its day. There are photos but mainly tons and tons of ads. The paper is a little fragile.

1904- The Blue-J. Published in Janesville, WI. It has news and sports happenings of the local high school. Lots of fun snippets to read along with ads from the area. It is printed with blue ink.

1935- Veillees Des Chaumieres. Published in France by Gautier-Languereau in Paris. There are illustrations and ads- very fun to look through and use.

Mimi’s notes: Please remember- the journalistic style in those days was quite different that what it is now. They were very bombastic and cynical and included many details that would never be in our newspapers now. If you are unsure of the German and French language in the papers, the sheep use Google Lens to translate them. That is a whole lot of fun too!
