La Spinning Wheels!
La Spinning Wheels!
I learned to spin on an old old Russian spinning wheel--it is over 100 years old and was most likely used to spin flax for linens way back when. It has a unique chatter when it is spinning but I love imagining the stories it is trying to tell. Today I use the wheel for lace weight yarns and also for spinning silk....

My next old wheel is a Norwegian wheel, which looks to be more all purpose and was most likely a wool spinning wheel. It has its original black paint complete with a little tole painting that looks original but I am not sure. It has a little bobble in the wheel but is wonderful for spinning anything!

My first ever new wheel was my Kromski Symphony wheel that I would never have except for a wonderful trade with a friend! It is a bigger version of the Norwegian wheel and I spin lots of single ply that I use in my own knitting on this lovely mahogany wheel....

My little 'kick' spindle is a hoot, but very labor/time intensive so it is a wheel I get out when I need a break from the routine. It is old old and took me a bit to figure it all out but I love quill spinning now!

My penguin wheel is a sweet wheel that I just got in 2006. It is a step toward my hope to someday own a walking wheel or a Taos wheel. (a bit out of my financial reach for a while but keeping my eye out!) I spin my quill spun yarn on this wheel now, it lets me spin the same soft singles as the kick spindle but much faster!!

This is my 'stable' of wheels that help me fan out the creativity in my studio--each with a fun 'job' of its own! (will be updating pics soon!-so far pictured is the Kromski-complete with a Shnauzer who wants to spin?, the kick spindle, the penguin, then the Norwegian wheel)
