About our roving and batts....
About our roving and batts....
After the wool is washed and dry, some is run through our wool picker to open up the locks. From there, it is carded into large batts here at the farm. We have a Patrick Green jumbo batt carding machine that produces batts measuring about 18 x 36 inches when removed from the carder. This carder creates batts that are not compacted but very lofty and easy to spin or felt! Start your spinning, either by separating a strip from the batt (which is very similar to roving because of the length of the batts), starting in a corner of the batt or drafting the batt into roving. Many of the selections would be great for felting too!

Our wool is also sent out for machine carding and blending into a wonderful to spin roving! We send wool Shari at Morro Fleece Works where the fiber is carded into beautiful loose or pin drafted roving. We also send fiber locally to our friends at Argyle Fiber Mill.

All types of roving are beautiful, carefully crafted and wonderful to spin!

Please remember that even though we work hard to only use the cleanest wool in our fleeces, most of the fleeces we work with are from sheep who do not wear coats or covers. We do not carbonize our wool so you may find a bit of vegetable matter here and there--we try to make our descriptions as accurate, both in words and color, as possible! Our sheep are encouraged to be sheep first, clean last (thank goodness because they could care less about clean!!)

Thank you to our good friend Holly K. of Vermont for letting us use her Kodah dog's great picture--she LOVES fiber and what better place to nap right? Looks like a good idea to me!!
