Bella Mia!
Bella Mia!
Bella Mia came to us during a recent rescue we worked on with Jenny--that was a large rescue--22 llamas--all wild and not wanting to move out! While we were there, in a corner of the yard was a limping, skinny and sad little gray sheep. I asked the humane officer to negotiate that little sheep's freedom and I got to take her home with me. She was in sad shape, unable to stand on her front feet, 'items' grown into her skin and had never been sheared. We guess her age to be at least 8-10? Sad to have a life like that for all that time.

We brought her home and slowly worked as she could stand to have her fleece trimmed, we soaked the 'items' out of her hide and left enough wool for her to stay snug and warm for the winter--even though I wanted to take that wool right down to the skin! Poor girlie. We trimmed her overgrown feet and then let her rest and eat. Lots of good hay, cracked corn (at least her teeth are good!) with Beet Pulp mixed in that tastes like molasses (or so the sheep say). After a few days on her own to be sure she had no bad bugs, we moved her in with Kelly--since she and Kelly would be about the same 'speed'. They have bonded forever I think, they eat out of the same bowl, sleep side by side and Kelly will even stamp her foot at me and 'protect' her friend Bella if Bella is sleeping or resting and 'doesn't want to be bothered'. Bella's legs are still an issue in front, one is shorter than the other and she has arthritis issues that are under control with very basic meds.

The bond between them is amazing and I hope they are with us for a very long time..... Hooray for Bella Mia (my beauty).

We got to have Bella with us for most of that winter, but she was in such pain we could not control it for her. It was kinder to say 'until later' and let her go. She was so sweet, and after we lost Kelly earlier that week, I think she was ready to go. Her spirit never flagged, I am always so amazed at the trust she had, even after being so neglected by humans. I will miss you my Bella Mia- until we meet again, sleep my sweet....
