Tips: Washing Llama/Alpaca fiber
Tips: Washing Llama/Alpaca fiber

Never tried washing camelid fiber? Now's a great time to give it a go! It is a much more resilient fiber than most people think! Here is how the sheep wash camelid fiber:

WATER TEMPERATURE:I use warm water, a little warmer than luke warm - to wash camelid fiber. There is no need for blasting hot water since the fiber does not have any lanolin- as in sheep wool. With warm water, you are able to 'mess with' or move the fiber around with out worry of felting too. Yey!

SOAP:A dab of Dawn dishsoap, laundry soap, or I like to use Orvis paste soap (an animal shampoo).

Washing: Fill sink/top loading washer with warm water, soap of choice. Add the fiber, making sure it all soaks down into the soak. Let soak for about 1/2 hour, then set washer to spin.... (no agitation!)

Refill sink/washer with warm water, add fiber, let soak for 1/2 hour or so. Before you spin this out, go ahead and swish the fiber around a little, this helps loosen some of the dust those stinkers like to collect.

Repeat until you are happy with the cleanliness of the fiber.

Allow to dry and wa-la. If you plan to dye the fiber, pop into your dyepots with out drying.... just have fun! Fiber is an adventure!!

Got questions? We are just an email away- and love talking fiber..... ;0)
